Franklin County Archers, Archery in South Auckland New Zealand,

Raewyn and Nigels trip to Nolfolk

Nigel and I have recently returned from Norfolk Island where we attended their annual Archery Championships.  There were about 40 archers from NZ, Australia and Norfolk Island.  The competition is organised by the Norfolk Club. Jo and Jono Snell do a great job of being the main organisers, as well as being fantastic hosts

The archery club is set amongst the beautiful grounds of the Melanesian Church and is a combination of bush and open ground.  Each morning was a 20 target 3D round.  Muster was at 9 and we kicked off each morning at about 9.15 and were finished by 12 so we had the afternoons free.

Targets were moved each day, so each day was very different.  One of the bear targets had been set up as a marauding bear in the rubbish bin and another was dressed as William Tell, including a bow and goose fletched arrows.  I have to admit that my favourite target was the lion, although on the first day he was a very long downhill shot and I missed him and scored my first ever 4, needless to say he was sworn at-and not only by me!

One morning the lion was used as a club fundraiser.  He was placed down the hill and from the church it was a 200m shot.  For $2 you could shoot 3 arrows.  The winner, who won half the kitty, was the shooter who got the closest to the heart zone.  Many arrows were fired.  I chickened out as I was scared of losing arrows.  The eventual winner turned out to be the only one to even hit the target!

My fear of losing arrows was unfounded as all were recovered.

Nigel managed to score himself some Norfolk big game.  (The only animal they can shoot over there is…. the wild chicken.  Nigel shot a beauty rooster which made the Aussies jealous and the Norfolk Islanders take the mickey out of him-he is now known as Cornelius, after the Kellog’s rooster.

Nigel and I can both highly recommend this competition to all other archers.  The people are so friendly and open and the island is beautiful with a fascinating history to explore.  It’s a very friendly shoot, everyone is there for a good time and to meet new people.  If you are interested in finding out more please contact Nigel or myself.  The dates for 2009 are 5th-12th July and package deals for flights, accommodation and rental car are available.
